Cyprus residence permit processing time runs from one month to four, depending on which route you file, and the Migration Department publishes a figure for most of them. Below is each one, with the routes that have no official figure marked as such rather than filled in with a guess.
Cyprus residence permit processing time, by route
| Route | Stated decision time | Fees |
|---|---|---|
| EU registration certificate (MEU1) | 1 month | EUR 20 |
| Company of foreign interests, staff and owners | 1 month | EUR 70 + EUR 80 + EUR 70 |
| Digital nomad permit | 5 to 7 weeks | EUR 70 + EUR 70 |
| Investor permanent residence, Regulation 6(2) | about 2 months | EUR 500 + EUR 70 per person |
| Visitor permit (MVIS8) | usually 4 months | EUR 70 + EUR 70 |
| Permanent residence, third-country family of an EU citizen (MEU3) | up to 6 months | EUR 20 |
| Category F permanent residence, Regulation 5 | no published figure | EUR 500 + EUR 70 per person |
| Startup visa | 5 weeks for the approval stage | EUR 120 + EUR 130 + EUR 70 |
Read those as decision times, not as how long the whole thing takes you. The clock starts when a complete file is accepted, and the part nobody publishes is how long it takes to assemble apostilled documents, Cyprus medical tests and certified Greek translations from wherever you currently live. On a normal file that stage is longer than the Department's own turnaround.
Apply for a Cyprus residence permit: where it is filed
The investor and Category F routes are submitted in person, or through a representative, at the Migration Department in Nicosia. A digital nomad application goes to the same office, within three months of arriving in Cyprus. EU registrations are handled through the Migration Department's own offices on form MEU1.
Since 17 June 2024 the deciding authority is the Migration Department of the Deputy Ministry of Migration and International Protection. Some of its pages still carry the old Civil Registry and Migration Department name; the office is the same one.
Apply for residence permit Cyprus: the order that saves a month
The sequence matters more than the paperwork. Three things tend to go in the wrong order:
- A home before the application. Almost every route wants a title deed or rental contract in the file, so the lease comes first.
- The company before the permit, if you want the 60-day tax result. The Income Tax Law asks for a business, employment or directorship in Cyprus at some point in the tax year. Incorporating in December of the year you wanted to claim is cutting it fine.
- Documents gathered once. Criminal record certificates and civil status documents have limited lives, so collecting them before you know the route usually means collecting them twice.
Cyprus migration department application: what delays one
In our experience the file comes back for three things: a missing apostille, a translation that was not done by a certified translator, and income evidence that does not match the form of income claimed. The investor route is specific about the last one. On the new-build housing category, income must come from abroad and is proved by the tax return of your country of tax residence, not by a bank statement and not by a letter from your own company.
Category F is the one route where we will not give you a number. The Migration Department publishes no target for it, and the estimates in circulation range from about a year to several years. We would rather say nothing than repeat a figure with nothing behind it.
Common questions
- What is the fastest Cyprus residence permit?
- For EU citizens, the MEU1 registration certificate, with a one-month target. For third-country nationals, the foreign-interest-company route is also decided within one month, and a digital nomad permit in five to seven weeks.
- How long does the Cyprus investor permanent residence take?
- The Migration Department targets about two months for the expedited Regulation 6(2) procedure. Category F, under the ordinary procedure, has no published target.
- Where do I apply for a Cyprus residence permit?
- The investor and Category F routes are filed in person, or by a representative, at the Migration Department in Nicosia. A digital nomad application is filed at the same office within three months of arriving.
- Can I stay in Cyprus while my application is pending?
- That depends on the route and on the status you held when you filed, and it is the question worth settling before you travel rather than after. Ask us with your dates and nationality.
If your permit or visa-free year ends soon, the dates matter
Renewals and changes of permit type have to be filed before your current status ends. We can check your dates with you and tell you what still fits.
