Cyprus residence permit documents, the file an application is built from

Cyprus residence permit documents are where applications are actually won and lost, not at the counter. Every route wants four of the same things, two routes add their own, and the item that sinks more files than any other is a translation nobody certified.

Cyprus residence permit card: what you actually hold

The document is the Alien Registration Certificate, and it costs EUR 70 per person. The first entry in the Aliens Register is charged separately on the visitor route, which is why a first visitor permit comes to EUR 140 and a renewal to EUR 70.

On the investor permanent residence route the permit is granted for life and the card is renewed every ten years. On temporary routes the card runs with the permit, so a visitor permit card is a one-year document and a foreign-interest-company permit can run up to three years.

Cyprus residence permit check: the status of an application

The Migration Department office where the file was submitted is the place to ask, quoting your Aliens Register number and the application reference. Investor and Category F files are submitted at the Nicosia office and that is where they are tracked.

We have not found a public online status checker published by the Migration Department, so we do not link to one. Several third-party sites claim to offer this; we have not verified any of them and would not put personal data into one.

Cyprus residence permit documents that every route wants

Every route has its own list, but four items appear on nearly all of them:

  • Passport, valid well beyond the permit you are asking for.
  • Criminal record certificate from your country of origin or residence, apostilled.
  • Proof of where you will live: title deed or a signed rental contract.
  • Health insurance, or proof of cover in the national health system.

The visitor route adds its own: the income evidence, a bank guarantee covering repatriation in an amount that depends on your nationality, medical tests taken in Cyprus, and a utility bill under six months old. The investor route adds the investment contract and payment evidence showing the funds came from abroad, plus the tax return from your country of tax residence where the income must be foreign.

Apostilles and translations, which is where files die

A document issued outside Cyprus generally needs an apostille from the issuing country and a certified Greek translation. Both steps are routine and both take longer than people plan for, because the apostille is issued by a different authority from the document itself and the translation has to be done by a translator Cyprus recognises.

The failure we see most often is a correctly apostilled document with an uncertified translation attached, which is treated as no translation at all. The second most common is a certificate that was valid when it was collected and expired while the rest of the file was being assembled.

What to keep after the permit is issued

Keep the lease, the utility bills and the record of your days in and out of Cyprus, because those are the documents a tax residence certificate application asks for later. The Tax Department's own list for a certificate names the yellow slip or residence document, passport, title deed or tenancy agreement, a utility bill under six months old, an employment contract and a Social Insurance statement. A residence file and a tax file end up asking for the same paper, so collecting it once is the whole trick.

Common questions

How do I check my Cyprus residence permit status?
Through the Migration Department office where the application was filed, quoting your Aliens Register number and application reference. We have not found a public online status checker published by the Department, so we do not point you at one.
What is the Cyprus residence permit card?
The Alien Registration Certificate, which costs EUR 70 per person. On the investor permanent residence route the permit itself is for life and the card is renewed every ten years.
Do my documents need an apostille?
Documents issued abroad generally need an apostille and a certified Greek translation. This is the most common reason a Cyprus file is returned.
How recent do the documents have to be?
Criminal record certificates and civil status documents have short useful lives, and the visitor route asks for a utility bill less than six months old. Collect them after the route is chosen, not before.
