Cyprus bank account for non residents, and the documents behind one

Cyprus bank account for non residents is where most residency plans actually get stuck, and almost nobody budgets time for it. Two of the main permit routes assume the account already exists, and opening one is the one step in the whole process that no adviser can promise you.

Cyprus bank account for non residents: why the permits assume one

The visitor permit's income test is not about what you earn, it is about what arrives. The Migration Department's supporting-documents list asks for remittances into a Cyprus bank account of at least EUR 2,000 a month, or, for a first permit, a transfer or deposit of at least EUR 10,000, with at least EUR 6,000 still in the account at renewal. You cannot show any of that without a Cyprus account.

The investor route for permanent residence is stricter in a different way. The EUR 300,000 must be transferred into Cyprus from abroad, from your own or your spouse's account, or from a company you solely own, and paid into the seller's account at a Cyprus bank. Local borrowing does not qualify, and nor does money arriving from a third party.

So the sequence that works is: banking relationship, then money movement, then application. The sequence people try is the reverse, and it is why files sit with the fee already paid.

What a bank is actually assessing

Cyprus banks operate under EU anti-money-laundering rules, and Cyprus banking was restructured after 2013 in a way that left its compliance culture conservative. A compliance officer is answering one question: can I document where this money came from, to a standard that survives an audit in three years' time.

That means the paperwork that helps is boring and historic. Audited company accounts. Employment contracts and payslips going back years. A property sale contract with the matching bank entries. Tax returns from the country you are leaving. What does not help is a large balance with a short history and an explanation given verbally.

We do not publish a bank-by-bank checklist, minimum deposits or onboarding timeframes, because each Cyprus bank sets its own and changes them without notice. Pages that do publish such lists are usually quoting one bank's policy from some earlier year. Ask us what the banks are currently accepting at the time you are moving, rather than reading it off a page.

What we can and cannot do

We can tell you which route's banking requirement you are going to meet first, prepare the source-of-funds file properly, introduce you to a bank with the documents already assembled, and tell you early if we think a particular profile is going to struggle. On a file where sanctions or restrictive measures could be in play we will say that it belongs with a lawyer who does that work before anything else happens.

What we cannot do is guarantee an account. Nobody can, and an adviser who says otherwise is either misunderstanding the decision or hoping you will not ask who makes it.

The account you need later

Beyond the permit, the account is what the rest of the move runs on. The Tax Department's list for a tax residence certificate includes a utility bill and a Social Insurance statement, which both assume a Cyprus financial life. A Cyprus company needs its own account to receive revenue and pay salaries. And the health and social insurance contributions are collected from somewhere.

Open the personal account first, then the company account once the company exists. Trying to do both at once with one incomplete file is how a six-week process becomes a six-month one.

Common questions

Do I need a Cyprus bank account before applying for residency?
For the visitor permit, in practice yes: the income evidence is remittances into a Cyprus bank account, or a transfer or deposit of at least EUR 10,000 for a first permit. For the investor route the money must reach the seller’s account at a Cyprus bank from your own account abroad.
Can you guarantee a Cyprus bank account?
No, and nobody can. Account opening is each bank’s own decision under EU anti-money-laundering rules and its own risk policy. What can be done is to prepare a complete source-of-funds file and introduce you properly.
What do Cyprus banks ask for?
Identity documents, proof of address, a residence document where you have one, and documented evidence of where your money came from, traced back far enough to satisfy a compliance officer. We do not publish a definitive checklist because each bank sets its own.
Does a Cyprus company make an account easier?
It gives the bank a reason for the relationship, which helps, and it brings its own onboarding file with audited accounts and ownership structure. It is not a shortcut through compliance.
