Cyprus pink slip work permit is a phrase for something that does not exist. The visitor permit and a work permit are opposites: Regulation 14 allows a stay precisely on the basis that you are not economically active in Cyprus.
Cyprus pink slip work permit: what the visitor permit is for
The Migration Department describes it as covering holidays, touring, or looking into whether to settle in Cyprus. The income test follows from that: remittances into a Cyprus bank of around EUR 2,000 a month, or a transfer or deposit of at least EUR 10,000 for a first permit. You are showing that you live on money from elsewhere.
The moment you earn in Cyprus, you are outside what the permit covers.
The routes that do allow work
| Route | What it requires |
|---|---|
| Digital nomad permit | Remote work for a foreign employer or foreign clients, net income from EUR 3,500 a month, capped at 500 permits |
| Company of foreign interests | Gross salary from EUR 2,500 a month, a two-year contract, the company registered as foreign-interest |
| EU Blue Card | Gross salary from EUR 43,632 a year, ICT, pharmaceutical research or shipping only |
| Startup visa | Approval by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy first |
| EU, EEA and Swiss citizens | Free access to employment and self-employment after registering on MEU1 |
The investor permanent residence route sits oddly here: it does not allow employment either, except as a director of the company you invested in.
The grey area people ask about
Working remotely for a foreign employer while holding a visitor permit. That is precisely the activity the digital nomad permit was created to cover, which tells you the Department regards it as needing its own permission rather than falling outside the rules.
We are not going to tell you it is fine. A renewal is a fresh look at whether you met the conditions of the permit you held, and the downside is not a fine but the next permit.
Why the confusion persists
Because the visitor permit is cheap, EUR 140 the first time, and because the term "pink slip" is informal usage rather than anything the Department publishes. Informal names attract informal beliefs about what they allow.
What the visitor permit is genuinely good for
Someone living on dividends, rents or a pension from outside Cyprus. Combined with a Cyprus company and a home you own or rent, it can sit under a 60-day tax residency claim, because the Income Tax Law asks about days, a Cyprus office or business and a home, not about which permit you hold. Holding a directorship is not employment.
That is the arrangement most founders end up in, and it is legitimate precisely because the money is not Cyprus employment income.
The route is described on the Migration Department's visitors page.
Common questions
- Can I work on a Cyprus pink slip?
- No. The visitor permit under Regulation 14 covers holidays, touring and looking into settling in Cyprus, and allows no economic activity here.
- Can I work remotely for a foreign employer on it?
- That is exactly what the digital nomad permit exists for, and it has its own conditions: net income of at least EUR 3,500 a month and a cap of 500 permits.
- What happens if I work on one anyway?
- You put the current permit and future applications at risk. A renewal is a fresh look at whether you met the conditions of the one you held.
Not sure which permit fits you?
Cyprus law has several residence permit types, and each one has its own conditions and renewal rules. Send us your nationality and how you earn. We reply with the permit that fits, or we tell you if none of them does.
