Cyprus apostille requirement is where more applications stall than on any substantive condition. A document issued outside Cyprus generally needs an apostille from the issuing country and a certified Greek translation, and the two come from different places on different timetables.

Cyprus apostille requirement: what needs one

  • Criminal record certificates from your country of origin or residence.
  • Civil status documents: marriage certificates, birth certificates for children included in the application.
  • Official income evidence the route relies on, such as the tax return of your country of tax residence, which the investor route requires on the new-build housing category.
  • Academic or professional documents where the route asks for them, as the foreign-interest-company route does for a relevant degree.

The mistake that looks like compliance

A correctly apostilled document with a translation you did yourself, or had done by somebody without certification. The file looks complete. It is treated as having no translation at all, and it comes back.

The second most common version is a certificate that was valid when collected and expired while the rest of the file was being assembled. Criminal record certificates and civil status documents have short useful lives, and the visitor route also wants a utility bill less than six months old.

Why the order matters

The apostille is issued by an authority in the country that issued the document, not by the body that wrote it, and not by Cyprus. The translation happens after, because it has to be a translation of the apostilled document.

Get that order wrong and you pay twice. Collect the documents before the route is chosen and you often collect twice as well, because different routes want different things.

What it costs you in time

Nothing is published, because it depends entirely on the issuing country. What we can say is that on most files this stage runs longer than the Migration Department's own decision target, whichever route you are on. A one-month target for an EU registration or a two-month target for the investor route both assume the paper is already in order.

The useful habit

Keep the originals, the apostilles and the certified translations together, and keep them after the permit is issued. The Tax Department's list for a tax residence certificate asks for an overlapping set, so a residence file and a tax file end up wanting the same paper. Collecting it once is most of the trick.

The supporting documents for the visitor route are listed in the Migration Department's own document list.

Common questions

Do documents for Cyprus need an apostille?
Documents issued outside Cyprus generally need an apostille from the issuing country, plus a certified Greek translation.
Can I translate documents myself?
No. A correctly apostilled document with an uncertified translation is treated as having no translation at all.
Which documents need it?
Typically criminal record certificates and civil status documents such as marriage and birth certificates, plus any foreign tax return or official income evidence the route relies on.
